Remember...
...communication and cooperation are essential for a good anesthetic and procedural outcome. Active participation in your care helps ensure your safety and comfort.
Follow these 6 simple steps to ensure your safety before surgery:
1. Do not eat anything after midnight the day before surgery.
2. Do not drink SIX hours prior to your surgery admission time. This is very important! If you forget and do ingest something, your surgery may be cancelled/postponed/rescheduled.
3. Please take routine morning medicines with a small sip of water.
4. DIABETICS, please take 1/2 of your normal dose the day of your surgery and bring the rest with you to the center.
5. Refrain from chewing gum or chewing tobacco morning of surgery. If you are a smoker, do not indulge that morning.
6. Contact lenses may be left in, but please inform your provider of their presence.
Your anesthesia provider will meet with you the day of surgery. He/She will listen to your heart and lungs, review your chart and confirm any changes in your health history. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and get any further explanations you might want. If you wish, your anesthesia provider can call you prior to your surgery to answer any questions you might have about your care. Your comfort and well-being are second only to your safety!
If you are prone to motion sickness or have had other anesthetics where this has been a problem, talk to your anesthesia provider. There are newer medications that help greatly in the treatment of post-operative nausea and vomiting, making your recovery a more pleasant experience.
